Where Do You Put the Resource.cfg File for Sims 3?

in Free Sims 3 Downloads, Sims 3 Guides, Sims 3 Technical Stuff

“Where do you put the Resource.cfg file for Sims 3?” is one of the most commonly emailed questions I get and I probably receive it a couple of times a week.

I figured, since I get the question so much, there’s obviously confusion about the Resource.cfg file so I’m putting this up. Now I can just link people when they email me. Yay!

Everything below this sentence assumes your game is patched to at least 1.12. If it’s not, patch your game. Or, don’t. Up to you.

So, where do you put the Resource.cfg file for Sims 3? The short answer is that the Resource.cfg file lives in your “Mods” folder.

Check here first to see if you already have the folder before you go any further since, who knows, maybe you’ve already done all this and forgot:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\
Windows Vista/7: C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\
Mac OS: /Users/[USER]/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/

No?

Download this:Sims 3 Mods Folder with Resource file and “unzip” it. I use WinRAR which you can download here.

Take your sparkly new folder named Mods and place it here:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\
Windows Vista/7: C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\
Mac OS: /Users/[USER]/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/

Now pat yourself on your back since you are now the proud parent of a Resource.cfg file as well as everything you need to start using custom content…once you download some. You can find a good selection of custom content here on the site by heading to our Free Sims 3 Downloads category. Also check out Mod the Sims for an extensive selection.

Keep in mind that this is just for installing .package files and not .Sims3Pack files.

Enjoy and good luck!
