One of the reasons I don’t play The Sims 3 Late Night as often as I’d like is I don’t have a lot of time when I can stop everything I’m doing on my laptop and dedicate it to nothing but The Sims. That’s when playing The Sims 3 in “windowed” mode comes in handy.
AND, there are some times when your game won’t load except when it’s windowed. If you run into that issue, you can use this trick to window your game and troubleshoot. FYI, the other way to set The Sims 3 to windowed mode – if you can start your game – is to click “Options” in the menu when the game is running, then “Graphics” and uncheck the “Enable Fullscreen Mode.”
First things first. You need a shortcut to the .exe of the most recent game you have installed; that’s Late Night for me.
Head over to where your game’s installed and you’re going to drill down until you find the Bin folder and the executable file. If you’re on a PC, it’s probably going to look something like this[ref]Keep in mind I’m running The Sims 3 on a Windows 7 machine.[/ref]:
[box type=”info”]C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Late Night\Game\Bin\TS3P03.exe[/box]
Once you find the executable file, right click on it and you should see something like what’s in the picture above. Left click on “Create shortcut.”
You’ll probably get something that looks like this:
Don’t freak; just click “Yes.”
Now you have a shiny new shortcut on your Desktop! This is also the way to bypass the Launcher if you’re having issues with that particular bitchy piece of software.
Right click on the shortcut.
Left click on “Properties.”
Look at the picture above. See the “Target:” line? Go to the very end of that after the .exe” and add a space and -w. Don’t add the period. Just felt the need to point that out to you.
There’s a chance you might have to run the game as admin so I included this picture. Just right click on the shortcut and then left click on “Run as administrator.”
The end result should be the same; your game runs windowed and you can multitask like a pro and/or troubleshoot why the hell your game’s being dumb.
