Five Steps to Shiny Custom Content in Sims 3

in Free Sims 3 Downloads, Sims 3 Guides, Sims 3 Lists, Sims 3 Technical Stuff

Custom content is to Sims 3 what great shoes and awesome clothes are to a mannequin. Sims 3 gives you a good base but what you add to the game is what makes it really shine.

If you’ve been wanting to add custom content to your game but you didn’t know how, I can help you.

First things first, this assumes you installed your Sims 3 game in the default location meaning when you installed the game, you didn’t change anything when it asked you where to save – you just clicked “OK”.

Also, I run my game on a PC. If you’re running your game on a Mac, anything you ask me will be like you’re speaking French – I’ll have no idea what you’re talking about.

Step One: Get WinRaR.

If you don’t have a program that “unzips” files, you’ll need that. Download WinRaR if you don’t have it – you can use it for free during its trial period.

Step Two: Install Framework.

Read this post so you’ll know what you read, “framework for Sims 3.”

Before you go messing with anything with your game, download Dephy’s Framework Installer Tool [Monkey Bars]. This doesn’t install custom content; it gets your game ready for custom content. If you’re running Sims 3 on a Mac, you can download Marhis’s Framework Installer for Mac OS X. And that’s the last I can help you when it comes to Mac.

When you run the program, you’re going to see some red alerts. That’s OK. The program is checking for the framework and it shouldn’t find any. Click on “Install” and it will install it.

Now that you’ve done that, you’re ready to install your favorite custom content.

Listen carefully, do NOT install your custom content in My Documents. That’s wrong and if you put your custom content in My Documents, the content isn’t going to work and you might possibly cause the universe to implode.

Step Three: Find Your Packages Folder.

Head to: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\. This is going to be the warm, snuggly new home of your custom content. If you have an Expansion or Stuff Pack installed, you’re going to go to that Expansion or Stuff Pack’s \Mods\Packages\ folder.

Step Four: Install Your Custom Content and Test.

Find the custom content you downloaded and either right click on it and then “Cut” [or "Copy" if you want to keep the original in its respective folder]. Right click in the opened Packages folder – which should be empty if you’ve never installed any custom content – and paste your custom content in that folder. You can select multiple custom content files at once and paste them as a group if you have a lot of it.

However, my suggestion to you is to install a bit at a time, test it in-game and then install some more if you’re game is behaving like a good little game.

Sidenote: Be sure to read the descriptions for the stuff you download. [Duh] If you see the words “default replacement”, know that custom content is going to replace the default Sim files. A good example of this is Hysterical Paroxysm’s Increased Texture Detail & Shine Skin Replacements. Personally, I don’t see why someone would want the default Sims 3 skins, but some people don’t have a problem with them – you weirdos.

Step Five: Have a Blast.

YAY! You just installed some custom content!

For super in-depth instructions as well as fixes if your stuff isn’t working, check out the SimsWiki from Mod the Sims – über helpful.

If I’ve left something out or have missed a step, let me know in the comments and I’ll fix mah mistakes.

hey amy , im just wondering, ive installed cars in the sims 3, it is a custom content (.sim3package) . . It shows in the game . . . But when i downloaded and installed a sim which is a .sim3package format too, it doesnt show up in the game, i cant find it? Maybe you can tell me where to locate it in the game . . have you downloaded a sim model before? its just that i really cant find it. All others i have downloaded are working except this one . . . please help me . . . . .

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

garjeenmar All of the sims I've installed have been in .sim format and I've installed them here: C:\Users\[me]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\SavedSims.

Here's something that might help: "I suppose it's a little late now, but if you ever want to do this again, you just have to send her into CAS using a dresser or mirror (or hack) and then click her icon, "Save to Bin"."

Came from here: http://www2.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=387977

Good luck!

Hey i was wondering if you could help me, i used to play sims 3 on my computer and had custom content installed but now i recently bought a laptop and i want to transfer the cc from the computer to laptop. i copied and paste it but on the computer launcher i see objects that are not in my documents in the computer so they're not showing up on the laptop. i want to transfer these as well but i dont know how.

sweetpandemonium09 5 pts

if i already downloaded custom content to my sims 3 game before downloading framework (i didnt know i needed it until none of the cc was showing up in game) ive deleted everything ive downloaded from the multiple places it would be downloaded to. can i now install framework and have it run right? or do i need to uninstall and reinstall the games?

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

sweetpandemonium09 Don't uninstall your games! Follow this and you should be fine: http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/08/12/install-sims-3-custom-content-with-framework/

Good luck!

Wait, I fixed that prob but I have another one! I pasted the things in the Packages folder but they are not in the game.. Do I do something to them with winRAR? And I have a few expansion packs installed. The newest one being Generations. Do I put Mods/Package in that file or just the sims 3 base game file? Thanks in advance (:

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

katiemariecarmelhennessy If you're patched to 1.12 or higher, the content needs to go here: Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\

You no longer have to worry about placing the content in the most recent expansion or stuff pack folder; you only place the content in the base game folder.

Good luck!

katiemariecarmelhennessy 5 pts

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer Thank you and do I have to do anything with winRAR or is that it?

katiemariecarmelhennessy 5 pts

What I mean is I clicked 'Extract here' and a new file with a white page icon came up. Is that supposed to happen? Lol I'm so clueless about CC XD

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

katiemariecarmelhennessy You should be good to go. Have you tested yet to see if it's showing up in-game?

katiemariecarmelhennessy 5 pts

Hi, I followed everything the thing said but whenever I try to save it to The Sims 3/Mods/Program Files, It says you do not have permission to save here blah blah do you want to save in users instead. Do you know what is going wrong?

SIMS<3 5 pts

Ok, I feel really dumb, but when you download things... where do you save them so you can extract them and then put them in C:\Users\[User Name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages? I have tried to save them to a few different files (including ones that I've made just for sims things on my desk top) to then extract them and put them there, but "extracting" isn't even an option. I have no idea why. It was at one point, but at that time I was doing things differently I'm sure. I don't even remember what I was doing to make that work at that time, but now I guess I'm confused as to why I can't extract them to place them? One pair of shoes showed up in my game... I honestly just think that that was magic or something though, because nothing else worked and I don't even know how/why that one thing did that lol. OMG! I deleted everything... as in all of my "stuff for the game" downloads so I could just start over and try it again, but now I'm stuck here =P What am I to do now? I don't know how to extract so it seems. I thought I was making progress too... lame! Oh and my computer finally stopped with the whole error thing and updated. I have no idea why it even did that. I think it must have been mad at me or something. who knows. That part is ok now though.

SIMS<3 Here ya go: http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/08/12/install-sims-3-custom-content-with-framework/

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

An error like this? http://www.sims3gamer.com/2010/03/12/sims-3-qtcore4-dll-issue/

SIMS<3 5 pts

My computer wont let me update my software now. Everytime I try it says there's an error and it wont finish. Whats happening... or not happing I guess I should say?

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

Put them where you said and THEN clear the cache. :)

SIMS&lt;3 5 pts

Do you delete the cache before you know if anything worked? I know you have, but nothing showed up in my game so I was scared to. I'm still confused. I'll try to download something again and see if anything different happens I guess. After you download, you extract the files and put them in C:\Users\[User Name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages, right? Just want to make sure that that's not where I messed up... and then what after that?

JamieToday 5 pts

okay where do i put it at amy in my packages folder or in my sims3?

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

JamieToday Go to C:\Users\[User Name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3

If you have a Mods folder then cut it from the The Sims 3 folder and move it to your Desktop. Put the Mods folder from the framework link here: C:\Users\[User Name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.

Any custom content you have goes here: C:\Users\[User Name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages

Clear your cache once you add new custom content.

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

JamieToday Try this: http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/07/07/the-sims-3-framework-made-super-easy/

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

SIMS<3. If you have the framework, you're putting your content here: C:\Users\[USER NAME]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages and you've cleared your cache, I don't know why your stuff isn't showing up. Try downloading a completely new piece of custom content and see if that will show. [I don't know why it won't let me directly reply to you.]

SIMS&amp;lt;3 5 pts

I have everything saved there now. Someone else told me to put it in the wrong place I guess. I already have the framework. I guess I'm just confused as to why nothing new is in my game yet. I followed all of the steps, and I believe that everything is where it should be, but it didn't work... or maby i'm just crazy and still confused lol. Now what do I do?

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

First off, this is where your custom content should be living: C:\Users\[USER NAME]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages.

If you're installing a custom Sim then that content should live here: C:\Users\[USER NAME]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\SavedSims

You also might want to check out this post about the framework: http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/07/07/the-sims-3-framework-made-super-easy/

This one will help you with cache files that you'll need to kill to let new mods show up: http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/02/10/sims-3-cache-files/

I hope those links help.

SIMS&amp;amp;lt;3 5 pts

I need help with the whole putting new things in my game process! I have Windows 7, and the other sites that I've read have weird steps or involve things that my computer doesn't seem to have or something... for example, putting the "extracted files" into a folder that should already be there, but isn't. I have WinRAR, put all of my downloaded sim things into C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Outdoor Living Stuff\Game\Bin\Mods\Packages. And that is where it remains. I have no idea what to do next. Some sites say that I should be all set to go, and others say that i'm not done yet, but I'm honestly just confused. Could you please help me?

Kerianne9 5 pts

When I download the cc to WinRar, it shows up and I try to move it to the Packages folder, but it won't give me the option to cut or copy it. Also, when I try to extract it, WinRar says it couldn't extract due to errors.

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts

If it's giving errors when you try to extract it then there's an issue with the file. Have you tried extracting another file?

Kerianne9 5 pts

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer The problem was from my computer blocking files going to the Sims3 folder. I changed the setting and it showed up in packages, but it's not in my game. Help?

Kerianne9 5 pts

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer Never mind, I figured it out. Thanks for the great article!!!!

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts

Kerianne9 Yay! I'm glad you got it figured out!

why has downloading changed i thought all custom content just went in the downloads folder???? why do i have to SET my game up to receive custom content??? and how do you view or NOT add all the recolours like in sim2 clean installer you could delete a recolour individually but now i cant do that???

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts

Cause this isn't Sims 2? And as far as the custom content goes, the patch referenced above changed that. It's actually kind of cool that EA finally admitted that folks have been using custom content since The Sims.

it in my downloads in the launcher... but not the game?

If it's in the launcher then it's not a package file but a Sims3Pack and that has to be installed via the launcher unless you're using a launcher replacement.

Hey i was just wondering.. i have windows 7 and i installed sims3 but the funny thing is There is No MOD folder... there was a download folder so i tried adding my cool stuff i got but didnt see none of them in the game So i Made a Mods/Packages Folder and added my stuff there and still None of them Showed up... wat should I do???

You're going to have to create it yourself. Head to DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3 and then create a Mods folder and then in that create the Packages folder. In the Packages folder is where you'll put your custom content.

The only thing I can tell y'all is if you're patched up to the most recent patch, install your stuff here: DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3ModsPackages.

If it's a .sims3pack file then you need to double click on it and install it via the Launcher.

mtunesxd 5 pts

I thought you go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\ to put your CC

Amy @ Sims 3 Gamer 5 pts moderator

mtunesxd Not since patch 1.12.

Hey.
I've followed the instructions, downloaded the thing you suggested. Then downloaded a piece of cc, copied the file into the Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Mods > Packages folder, and started the game. But it didn't show up in the game. Am I missing something? O'm very confused :)

Hi, I followed all your instructions, and all my other cc works well and shows up, but when I installed some new skins they don't show up, even after deleting the cache file...any idea what could cause that?

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help here:
My problem is, that I did everything as told, MonkeyBars said everything was OK, so I went on putting the package files to their places. First I did this with in Documents, then when they didnt work there I tried it in Program files too. Now when I put the in program files there are a few CC's I can see in the game, like clothes, hair. I never found where are my furnitures or skintones or patterns. The main confusing thing is: I have around 10 sim downladed and from that 10 I only seen 1 in the game. Everything was downloaded from MTS, and the zips were fine, so I dont think the problem is in the files.

Any ideas how I can fix this or should I try to reinstall sims alltogether and see if that helps?

I wouldn't do anything as drastic as reinstalling everything--that's a major pain in the ass.

Have you cleared your cache? http://www.sims3gamer.com/2011/02/10/sims-3-cache-files/

If you're patched to 1.12 or later then go into DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3Mods and make sure you've got the framework installed. http://www.sims3gamer.com/2010/03/24/sims-3-framework-and-why-you-need-it/ [Check out Option A]

Really hope something works for you. Good luck!

Ok well I downloaded every thing and my computer is saying that it cant identify the file and it wants me to find and locate something to open it? IDK what to do help

You don't try and open the files. Put the files here:

PATCH 1.12 AND LATER:
Windows XP: My DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3ModsPackages
Windows Vista/7 & Mac: DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3ModsPackages

Are you saying you don't have the Sims 3 program files? [C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsThe Sims 3]

If you're manually installing your custom content then you'll have to create the Mods and Packages folders but if you're patched past 1.12 then you should be doing all this in My Documents.

i found the "root file" which is a little confuseine for a noodie like me butt i did understand what ur talking about. oh and what i was saying before was that i did not know where to find the root file because i click on the advanced button and choosed anouther place to put the sims. THANX FOR HELPING A NOOB OUT XD

Don't call yourself a noob! That's just not nice. ;)
